Inside Out – Blurring the Lines

Inside Out – Blurring the Lines

Spring is upon us and people are getting ready for the coming warmer months. Over the years we have noticed the increasing trend of merging indoor and outdoor living. Traditionally treated as separate spaces – outdoor environments in our homes, restaurants, hotels and cafés are now being designed as extensions of interiors. With 85% of Australians living near the coast, people are spending more of their day-to-day in the outdoors. We have been looking into this trend and highlight how outdoor areas are transforming into spaces that offer all the creature comforts, practicality and aesthetics of our interiors.

GONE are the days of plastic lawn chairs and tables being the standard backyard furnishing. We now have access to an extensive range of weatherproof materials in all kinds of colours, textures and finishes – allowing people to create personalized and beautiful outdoor living spaces. Traditional ‘indoor’ accents such as rugs, lamps, ottomans, coffee tables and decorative accessories have been reinvented to stand up to and last in the outdoor world. This allows us to tie together outdoor settings and spaces just as we would indoors.

On top of the accessories, outdoor furniture has become increasingly refined… blurring the lines between outdoor and in. Alfresco living has never been more enjoyable with soft, durable fabrics, silhouettes and sophisticated patterns taking outdoor style, form and function to another level. Feelings of comfort and relaxation should include all areas of our homes, inside and out – especially in the warmer months while we are soaking up the sunshine. Evoking these feelings has become increasingly popular in residential and commercial surrounds with the likes of ‘winter gardens’ luring us outside into cosy outdoor havens while having the comforts of being indoors.

In summary, our homes have never been more customisable with advances in technology, materials and knowledge. People want to maximise the space they call home and creating beautiful, transitional spaces throughout is definitely the trending way to go…
